Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the main access city for the temples of Angkor, andlaunching pad for onward travel into Thailand. Although marred byhastily constructed modern buildings,Siem Reap does have beautifulcolonial and Chinese-style architecture adorning the streets of the OldFrench Quarter. The town itself offers many attractions for visitors, including Apsara dance performances, museums and craft shops.
Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville attracts tourists with its relaxed beach atmosphere when compared to Thailand's more developed ones. However, the city has attracted not only tourists, but several NGOs and foreign and national investors in the last years in order to develop not only the growing tourist industry, but its capacity as an international sea port[5] and other sectors like textile and real estate. In Sihanoukville is also located the main factory of Angkor Beer, the Cambodian national beer.
Choeung Ek (The Killing Fields)
Analysis of 20,000 mass grave sites by the DC-Cam Mapping Program and Yale University indicate at least 1,386,734 victims. Estimates of the total number of deaths resulting from Khmer Rouge policies, including disease and starvation, range from 1.7 to 2.5 million out of a population of around 8 million. In 1979,communist Vietnam invaded Democratic Kampuchea and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime.
Phnom Penh
For many travellers the allure of an unspoilt and little-explored country is irresistible. Emerging from a violent past of human rights atrocities, war and political instability,Cambodia is recovering from its past and slowly becoming a top destination on the South East Asian travel map. The magnificent temples of the 'Lost City' of Angkor are an irresistible attraction that, despite the dangers of unexploded landmines and the threat of rural banditry,is a must-see for any determined traveller.
Temples of Angkor
The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors. Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture:the temple mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early South Indian Hindu architecture, with key features such as the Jagati.
